Bernadette, 15 years old
Bernadette’s mother sent her to the streets to make money because her father was deathly sick in the hospital and they had no money to pay the bill. At first she tried work as a housemaid but no one would pay a little girl any real wages. She was only twelve years old when her aunt introduced her into prostitution to bring in more money.
She hated prostitution and when she saw a chance to join the Ladies of Hope to get out of it, she came to the church. Because she was only 12 years old, the church brought her into the Home of Hope.
Bernadette is still struggling with what she has been through. She is depressed, defeated, and sad most of the time and stays by herself. She feels like she is no good and is worried about the possibility of being HIV positive.
We are trying to show her care, comfort and love, but she still freezes up sometimes and goes into solitude for a couple days at a time. A little light is beginning to start in her but there is still a lot of sadness.
She wants to go back to school and become a banker someday.
